Founder & CEO
Dean brings a unique perspective and creative edge to the world of communications. He started experimenting with VoIP in 2000 as a means of networking two-way radio. In 2001, he built his first GSM-based VoIP network “out of curiosity”. That effort transformed into VoIPUser.org, a community site offering a self-funded SIP network and PSTN gateway that Dean co-founded in 2002. Today, VoIPUser.org is run as a non-profit entity by a volunteer workforce. It has over 80,000 subscribers and operates on a unique funding model which has never been repeated, despite efforts to do so by several consumer VoIP service providers over the last eight years.
The site is a reference for the VoIP industry and consumer alike and has become a focal point for the exchange of new ideas and technology advancement. His experience with VoIPUser.org has helped Dean gain extensive insights into technical issues such as Network Address Translation (NAT) traversal, fraud, Artificially Inflated Traffic (AIT) and interconnectivity, steering his community through the design of custom systems that solve those problems. By communicating with real users of communications products through the site, Dean has also obtained a unique insight into what users really want from communications services.
Dean is also an active writer and conference speaker on communications and is a named inventor on several telecoms patents.
In 2003 he filed several patents for unique services that Voxygen is now building into production systems to be used in client applications. Today, with clients such as Blabbelon and Skype, Voxygen helps its clients to realise voice as a premium revenue driver rather than a commoditised, low-margin service.
Before founding Voxygen, Dean served as Platform Director of Truphone, a mobile VoIP network operator based in London. There he developed an innovative FaceBook click-to-call application, defined the company’s platform strategy and worked with outside companies to broaden the awareness of the company.
Earlier in his career he was a lawyer specialising in technology and company commercial issues.
He was elected to the council of The Internet Telephony Service Providers Association (www.itspa.org.uk) in August 2010.
